East Uttar Pradesh may also be affected by extreme heat on 18-19 April. Delhi’s meteorological center Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal. This is the third consecutive day when the maximum temperature has gone above 40 degree Celsius here.
Mercury crossed 40 in most places
Data from the Central Pollution Control Board showed that Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the ‘moderate’ (198) category around 9 am. People in Punjab and Haryana also reeled under heatwave conditions as the maximum temperature in most parts remained above the 40-degree mark. According to a report by the Meteorological Department, Haryana’s Hisar is witnessing severe heat and the maximum temperature has been recorded at 41.5 degree Celsius.
Bathinda in Punjab recorded a maximum temperature of 41.6 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, the common capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department said that the Western Disturbance in the Western Himalayan region will bring some respite from the scorching heat in the plains of North-Western India from Tuesday.
Chance of rain in many places
Light rain is likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan during April 18 to 20. On April 18, heavy rain is expected in various parts of Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh. On the other hand, there is a possibility of heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on April 18-19. According to the Meteorological Department, there may be hailstorm at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab in the next two-three days.
