Amidst the slogans of ‘Basanti Ki Lehar’ and the revolutionary song ‘Rang De Basanti’, AAP leader and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday sung the great freedom fighter Bhagat, who sacrificed his life for the country’s freedom, amidst a crowd of over 4 lakh spectators. Mann, 48, a former comedian, has succeeded Charanjit Channi of the Congress, becoming the youngest chief minister of Punjab in nearly four decades.
Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mann. Mann, in his address after the swearing-in, said that he along with all the residents of the state took oath as the Chief Minister. “You all will be the chief minister,” he said. Mann will assume office in the evening, while the newly-elected MLAs will be administered oath during the one-day assembly session to be held in the state capital on Thursday.
However, Mann’s cabinet will take oath on Saturday at the Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh. Mann’s cabinet list is likely to include Harpal Cheema, Aman Arora, Baljinder Kaur, Meet Haier, Sarvjit Kaur Manuke and second-time MLA Budh Ram. Three podiums were erected on the platform of the swearing-in venue. While the Governor and Mann were on the central stage, the second was occupied by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet and the third was occupied by 91 AAP MLAs. “The golden ray of sun has brought a new dawn on Wednesday,” Mann said before taking the oath.
Mann tweeted, “The golden ray of sun has brought a new dawn today. Entire Punjab will take oath today at Khatkar Kalan to fulfill the dreams of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Baba Saheb.” BJP had also tried to invoke the great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the second prime minister to visit Hussainiwala in Punjab’s Ferozepur district. Hussainiwala is the place where the last rites of the three freedom fighters were performed after they were hanged in Lahore on March 23, 1931.
