Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, who led the team of doctors for the operation of the patient resident of Mahua area of Vaishali district, said that the ultrasound and X-ray report of the said patient showed that there was some serious disturbance in his intestines. Sharing a video footage of the operation and the X-rays taken before it with the media, Hasan said, “How the vitreous glass got inside the body of the said patient is still a mystery.”
He said, ‘When we asked, the patient said that he swallowed the glass while drinking tea. However, this is not a solid explanation. The human food pipe is too narrow for such an object to enter.’
According to Hassan, initially an attempt was made to remove the vitreous glass from the rectum through an endoscopic procedure, but it was not successful, so we had to operate and remove the glass by incision of the patient’s intestinal wall.
He said, ‘The condition of the said patient is stable now. The recovery is likely to take time, as the rectum has been sutured post-surgery and a fistular opening has been created through which it can pass stool. According to Hassan, the patient’s stomach is expected to heal in a few months, after which we will close the fistula and allow his bowels to function normally. Although the patient regained consciousness after the operation, neither he nor his family members were ready to talk to the media.
