Patna. The Nitish Kumar government of Bihar on Monday said that reports of such tragedies come from states where alcohol is not banned.
Building construction minister Ashok Choudhary in the state government and JD(U) MLC said that deaths due to alcohol are happening even in states where it is not banned. It is wrong to associate deaths with bans.
“Prohibition of liquor in Bihar is a good step. Still, media persons link the deaths due to spurious liquor with prohibition in the state. There have been deaths and investigation will reveal the real cause,” Choudhary said.
“Crimes like rape and murder are also banned in the country. Yet this is happening everywhere. In most cases, at the time of production, the makers of the liquor will not be aware that the product will become poisonous,” Choudhary said.
Chowdhary exclaimed, “Every person is aware of the dangers of consuming spurious liquor in Bihar and the state government has mentioned severe punishment, yet, they are consuming it. Why should they consume alcohol? and are risking their lives.”
Meanwhile, Bihar Police denied that the deaths were caused by consumption of spurious liquor in four districts, which claimed 42 lives since Saturday.
Since Saturday, 22 people have died in Bhagalpur, 12 in Banka, 5 in Siwan and three in Madhepura district.
Bihar Police’s ADGP Headquarters Jitendra Kumar Gangwar said, “Deaths have been reported under mysterious circumstances, but we do not have any evidence of spurious liquor in it. Most of them have lost their lives due to heart attacks, while among them Some of them had health issues.”
“The families of the deceased have cremated the bodies even before the arrival of the police. The actual cause of death of such victims cannot be possible,” he said.
