Imphal. A day after the BJP returned to power in Manipur for the second time in a row, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh met Governor La Ganesan on Friday and resigned from his post. However, the governor has asked him to continue in his post till the new government takes over, officials said.
A Raj Bhavan official said the chief minister along with other ministers and MLAs met the governor and submitted his resignation letter. Later, Singh tweeted, “Met the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur at Raj Bhavan to tender my resignation as Chief Minister today (Friday). Now I will serve as caretaker CM.”
Responding to hundreds of congratulatory messages sent by the Prime Minister as well as several Union Ministers and leaders across the country, Singh tweeted, “Our Honorable Prime Minister of the entire party for their guidance and tireless efforts in bringing peace and development in the state. Grateful to Shri Narendra Modi ji. With this decisive victory, we are marching ahead to scale greater heights under your able leadership.”
Sources said the BJP’s central leadership is likely to take a decision on the leadership in a day or two. The BJP had informally announced ahead of the first two phases of elections (on February 28 and March 5) that Singh would be the party’s chief ministerial face and head the next government.
In the Northeast region, after Assam, the BJP retained power for the second time in a row, winning 32 seats in the 60-member assembly in Manipur, securing an absolute majority on its own.
The 61-year-old leader, who joined the BJP from the Congress, has retained his electoral stronghold Hingang assembly constituency for the fifth time in a row.
He defeated his rival Congress candidate Pangejam Saratchandra Singh by a margin of 18,271 votes.
