Summary
Scotland Yard has issued a questionnaire to UK Chancellor and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak to investigate Britain’s much-discussed partygate scandal.
UK Chancellor and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has been issued a questionnaire by Scotland Yard officials. The move comes in the wake of an investigation into the violation of the
COVID-19 lockdown in government offices in the United Kingdom (UK), which is being called the partygade scandal.
The UK Treasury Department has confirmed that Indian-origin Rishi Sunak is among 50 officials to have been issued such a questionnaire. A written explanation has been sought from these people in the Metropolitan Police’s investigation under the name ‘Operation Hillman’.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s name is also included in the people to whom this questionnaire has been issued. A leaked document that surfaced earlier this week suggests such police questionnaires are a form of police questioning under caution.
People receiving this questionnaire are given information about its formal legal status. These people will have to submit it with complete accuracy within seven days. Downing Street has reported that Prime Minister Johnson has sent back his questionnaire.
Sunak has previously admitted that he attended a birthday party organized for Prime Minister Johnson in June 2020. The party took place in the cabinet room of 10 Downing Street. Prime Minister Johnson has faced a lot of criticism regarding this matter.
