London: After the formation of the Labour Party government in Britain after 14 years, Foreign Minister David Lammy is coming to India on 23 July. During this time, the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks are expected to be held and sealed. New parameters of the talks will be set this week. British Foreign Minister David Lammy is coming to India on Tuesday. This will be the first high-level visit under the newly elected Labour government in Britain. Talks on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) began in January 2022 under the then Conservative government. Its goal was to promote bilateral trade partnership of 38.1 billion pounds annually. But due to general elections in both the countries, it got hindered in the 14th round of talks.
A report published today in The Daily Telegraph newspaper quoted a source in New Delhi as claiming that the Indian side would like clarity on whether the Labor government wants to pick up where things left off or start afresh in some way. “India is keen to resume talks with a positive attitude, but needs clarity on the date,” the source told the newspaper. “The trade deal was in the final stages under the previous government, and we want to see whether the Labor government wants to pick up where it left off before the election in March, or start afresh. Our stance on visas for professionals has not changed. We are hoping for a positive outcome under a Labor government,” the source said.
India gave an open offer to Britain
In his last major intervention on India-UK relations, days before Labour’s landslide election win this month, Lammy told the India Global Forum (IGF) in London that he intended to complete the deal as soon as possible. Expressing regret over the missing of the Diwali, 2022 deadline set by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he said, “My message to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is that the Labour Party is ready to move forward. Let’s finally get our free trade agreement done and move forward. (Language)
