Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi
Islamabad: The ex-husband of Imran Khan’s third wife Bushra Bibi was attacked outside an Islamabad court by a lawyer of the former prime minister Khan when he appeared for the hearing of the couple’s appeal against their conviction in the un-Islamic marriage case. Khan (71) and Bibi (49) were on February 3 sentenced to seven years in jail each by a lower court for marrying during ‘iddat’, the mandatory period in Islam for a woman to wait after the death or divorce of her husband before remarrying.
The verdict was to be pronounced
Bushra’s ex-husband Khawar Maneka had filed a case against the couple in November 2023, alleging that they had married without Bushra observing the mandatory waiting period of ‘iddat’. He had requested the court to declare the marriage void. The court had reserved the verdict on the appeal on May 23, which was to be pronounced on Wednesday.
PTI lawyer attacked
While hearing the appeal filed by Bushra and her husband (Imran Khan) against their conviction in the case, Islamabad District and Sessions Judge Shahrukh Arjumand went to his chamber without pronouncing the verdict. Following this incident, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawyers threw bottles in the courtroom, following which Khawar’s lawyers escorted him out. However, while being escorted out, a PTI lawyer attacked Khawar inside the court premises, causing him to fall to the ground. (Language)
