HPV Vaccine for Men: Generally people think that HPV (Human Papillomavirus) responsible for cervical cancer attacks only women because only women have a cervix. But it is not so at all. Of course, men may not have a cervix, but this virus is present in both men and women and it can cause cancer in men too. Yes, men will not get cervical cancer but instead they can get penile, throat and anal cancer. A study by The Global Lancet Health found that the HPV virus is present in one out of every three men above 15 years of age. Therefore men can get cancer due to this virus.
How does HPV affect men?
According to the report, there are about 150 types of HPV viruses. At least one HPV virus is present in one out of three men. One in five men has more than one HPV virus. These people are at higher risk of cancer. The study also revealed that such people are often victims of genital infections. Therefore, it is very important for such people to control HPV virus. While talking to News 18, Gynecologist of Apollo Hospital, Dr. Dhvani Mago said that the cervix is the inner part of the reproductive organ of women. Cervical cancer can occur in this area. But men often think that if they do not have a cervix then how can they get cervical cancer. He told that there will be no cervical cancer but due to HPV, anal, penile and throat cancer can occur. Therefore it is very important to get vaccinated.
When can men get vaccinated?
Dr. Dhvani Moga told that every man should get HPV vaccine at an early age. He told that till now at least 9 types of vaccines have been available for HPV virus. Men between the age of 9 to 45 years can get vaccinated against HPV virus. However, if this vaccine is given to a male adolescent at the age of 11-12 years, its effect is much greater. This vaccine has to be administered twice a year at an interval of 6 months. Dr. Dhvani Moga said that if the vaccine is administered at this age, its efficacy remains up to 86 percent. Some people think that after forming a relationship it does not have any effect but this is wrong. It can affect men up to 30 years of age. Whereas women can take this vaccine till the age of 45 years. If men are above 26 years of age then they should get this vaccine after consulting a doctor. The biggest thing is that there should be awareness in the society to get HPV vaccine. Every woman should take this vaccine but men should also take this vaccine.
