new Delhi. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is going to install body scanners at major airports of the country including Delhi and Mumbai. According to officials, recently a trial run of body scanners was conducted at Delhi, Bangalore, Cochin, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai airports, in which some shortcomings were noticed. “Now, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has constituted a ‘Technical Sub-Committee’ to examine, evaluate and recommend testing instructions and test protocols for full body scanners,” he said.
The CISF officials also said that it has tested two techniques – backscatter X-ray and millimeter wave technology and the force has decided to adopt the latter because of its low radiation. However, the pandemic delayed the installation process and is now the top priority of the stakeholders.
CISF has also conducted a trial run of ‘Body Worn Camera’ which was conducted at Delhi and Mumbai airports. This camera will record the conversation between the CISF personnel and the passenger at the airports.
The force has also tested the latest scanning machines for cabin baggage, known as CT-XBIS (Computed Tomography). This X-ray machine or device combines a computed tomography (CT) imaging system with an advanced Explosive Detection System (EDS) to provide magnified, real-time, high-resolution and three-dimensional images of the object being examined at airports. Is.
Officials said it has the facility to accurately detect explosives concealed in luggage and can uncover it by displaying clear and sharp images.
A pilot project of Digi Yatra was conducted at Mumbai, Varanasi and Bangalore airports following the directive of the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Biometric based digital processing of passengers at airports called ‘Digi Yatra’.
Digi Yatra will envisage a connected ecosystem to enhance the seamless travel experience for the passengers as well as improve safety.
CISF is planning to set up a ‘Facial Recognition System’ with BAX and the trial run of Digi Yatra has been conducted at Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi airports.
Officials also said that CISF is also working on express security check facility for passengers at some places.
Under this system, passengers traveling with only hand baggage need not go to the check-in area but directly to the Pre-embarkation Security Check (PESC) area. Officials said that this e-expressway corridor will soon be implemented at all airports under CISF.
CISF is presently providing security at 64 airports including airports operated by Joint Venture and Public-Private Partnership.
