New Delhi. Before the Lok Sabha elections, Supreme Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has advised judges and lawyers to remain loyal to the Constitution. Justice Chandrachud also made important remarks regarding the judiciary at the centenary celebrations of Nagpur High Court Bar Association. He said that the judiciary has time and again proved its independence and non-partisanship. There is a deep connection between the independence of the judiciary and the independence of the Bar.
The Chief Justice said that the officials and members of the Bar Association should think thoughtfully while reacting to the court’s decisions and should not comment like the common people. He said that once the verdict is pronounced it becomes public property. We accept both praise and criticism. CJI DY Chandrachud, while talking about the lack of women in all the Bar Councils and Bar Associations of the country, said that in the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of women lawyers in the courts, but there is a lack of women among the elected members of the Bar Council and Bar Association. The shortage still exists.
The CJI said that there are no formal obstacles for women to contest the Bar Association elections, but still why women lawyers do not contest the Bar Association or Bar Council elections is a big question. While giving advice, he said that a comfortable environment has to be created for women in the elections of Bar Association or Bar Council. Talking about the participation of women, the CJI said that there was not a single woman officer in the Bar Council of India. Similarly, there was only one woman member in the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association. During this, Justice Chandrachud also mentioned the report for the year 2021 released by the Bar and Bench. It has been informed in this report that only 2.04 percent women are included among the elected representatives in the State Bar Council of 21 states and union territories.
