New Delhi . Amidst the power crisis, coal companies and Indian Railways have jointly ensured daily coal loading of 415 rakes of domestic coal and 30 rakes of imported coal. During the month of May, the availability of rakes for the power sector increased by an average of 472 rakes per day. Both the coal companies and railways jointly envisage to ensure loading of 415 rakes of domestic coal and 30 rakes of imported coal per day for the power sector. In the current month, the loading of domestic coal for power generation plants has been done on an average of 409 rakes per day.
The coalfields of Odisha have been a frequent issue of strikes, affecting coal extraction especially in the Talcher region. However, Railways has kept 60 additional empty rakes at all India level for maximum coal loading for the power sector.
Several operational efficiency measures have been taken to expedite the movement of coal rakes.
Coaching trains have been canceled across India to facilitate faster movement of coal rakes and congested areas.
The importance of smooth and timely movement of coal rakes to various power plants has been emphasized. Blocking and enroute movement of coal rakes for each work at the places of loading and unloading is being monitored by the Divisional team at the field level.
According to the railways, long distance haulage and convoy rakes have been increased in congested routes. In the current financial year, additional 100 rakes will be mobilized for loading of coal, which will further improve the availability of rakes for the power sector. In addition, to meet the future demand for coal, Indian Railways has already started procuring more than 1,00,000 wagons, which will further improve the availability of wagons.
