new Delhi. The Congress party has extended the deadline for the membership drive by 15 days. Now instead of March 31, it will now run till April 15. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal tweeted on Thursday and informed that the party has extended its special membership drive for 15 days and now it will run till April 15.
“Congress President (Sonia Gandhi) has approved the proposal of General Secretaries and in-charges to extend the special membership drive for 15 days,” he tweeted. This campaign will now run till April 15, 2022.
But the special thing is that no information has been given by the party regarding any change in the earlier fixed time limit regarding organizational elections. That is, the internal elections of the party will be held within its stipulated time frame. It is noteworthy that till the prescribed limit of March 31, about 4 crore members have become in Congress through slip and about 2 crore members through digital method. This is double the number compared to the membership drive that took place five years ago.
Congress strategists believe that the data of members made through digital medium will be real and it will be easy to reach them. All this is mainly a preparation to give competition to BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, problems related to the technology of the network and politicians-activists are coming in the way of this campaign. But despite this, on behalf of the states, all the district presidents and state presidents had demanded from the top leadership to extend the date of the party’s membership campaign, in view of which the party has taken this decision.
According to sources, while about 3 crore members have been made during five months from the slip, in the first 40 days itself, the number of members formed through digital campaign has reached about 13 million. In view of this, the date of the membership drive has been extended.
According to information received from party sources, till now 42 percent of the women have joined the digital membership, while 47 percent of the members are in the age group of 18 to 40. Congress’s digital membership started in February from Telangana. At present it continues in 16 states with Telangana on top.
