Malik sent to judicial custody
The 62-year-old NCP leader was arrested on February 23 and later sent to ED remand by a special court for questioning in the case. He was produced before Special Judge RN Rokade at the end of his remand on Monday. The court sent Malik to 14-day judicial custody (till March 21) as the central agency had not sought his further remand. Though the ED on its part did not press for Malik’s remand, but told the court that he was not cooperating in the investigation of the case. The ED said in the petition that the investigation is in the preliminary stage.
Petition in Bombay High Court
Meanwhile, the ED on Monday urged the Bombay High Court to dismiss the habeas corpus petition filed by Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik challenging his arrest by the agency in a money laundering case. The ED said that Malik’s arrest was in accordance with the law. In an affidavit filed before a bench headed by Justice PB Varale, the ED denied Malik’s allegations that he was arrested illegally and that his arrest was politically motivated. The ED said it is also probing two more cases related to Malik’s D-Company.
