Christians in Pakistan
Lahore: An elderly Christian man, who was seriously injured in a violent mob attack last week on charges of blasphemy in Pakistan’s Punjab province, has died, police said on Monday. A violent mob led by activists of the radical Islamic organization Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) attacked members of the Christian community on May 25, injuring two Christians and ten policemen.
Burned down houses and properties of Christians
The attack took place in Mujahid Colony in Punjab’s Sargodha district, about 200 km from Lahore. The mob burned and looted the houses and properties of Christians. According to police, the mob surrounded the house and shoe factory of an elderly Christian named Nazir Masih alias Lazar Masih and accused him of desecrating the Quran. The angry mob set fire to the shoe factory as well as some shops and a few houses.
Attempt to burn Christ too
According to the police, the FIR states that the mob tried to burn Masih as well but the police reached the spot and saved Masih and ten other members of the Christian community. Police said that Masih was undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Sargodha where he died on Sunday. However, this is not the first attack by a mob on people of the Christian community in Pakistan, even before this, people of other communities have been targeted in Pakistan on the charges of blasphemy.
