Gandhinagar. The Gujarat government on Thursday informed the Assembly that there has been a 43 per cent increase in custodial deaths in the state in the last two years. Amreli MLA Paresh Dhanani had sought information from the government about the custodial deaths. In response, the government said a total of 157 custodial deaths have taken place in the state in the last two years.
The government presented data on Thursday, in which it acknowledged that there were a total of 88 custodial deaths in 2020 and 100 such incidents in 2021. In 2019, there were a total of 70 such deaths, which means an increase of 42.85 per cent in just two years.
Responding to Dhanani’s question regarding the compensation given to the family of the victims, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi informed the House that Rs 6,00,000 was provided to a family of the victim in Surat. Other families got nothing.
