BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday sought urgent hearing of his plea for a direction to the Center to declare Ram Setu as a national heritage monument before a three-member Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hima Kohli. Accepting their request, the bench decided to hear the matter on March 9.
Subramanian Swamy then said that the matter should be heard, it should not be removed from the list. The bench said orally that it will be decided on March 9 whether to proceed with the matter or not.
Swamy then said that the Center has filed a counter-affidavit and the matter is pending for a long time. In April last year, a bench headed by the then Chief Justice SA Bobde had directed that the petition seeking declaration of Ram Setu as a national heritage be listed before the next CJI NV Raman.
Rama Setu is a bridge which is a chain of limestone bridges on the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu. It runs from Pamban Island near Rameswaram in South India to Mannar Island on the northern coast of Sri Lanka. This bridge is mentioned in the epic Ramayana, which states that this bridge was built by Lord Rama to reach Sri Lanka to rescue Sita.
