New Delhi . The Delhi High Court on Tuesday expressed serious concern over the condition of an ashram in North Delhi’s Rohini. The ashram is run by a baba, who allegedly keeps several girls there in animal-like condition. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Navin Chawla has issued a show cause notice to the institution. After the incident came to light, raids were conducted by a high court appointed committee at the ‘Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya’ run by Baba Virendra Dev Dixit. During the inspection, Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal was also asked to accompany the police.
The committee told the court that the girls and women were kept in animal-like condition in the ashram with no curtains even for bathing and from there about 40 women were rescued.
In 2018, the Delhi High Court had stayed the ‘Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya’ from being declared as a Vishwavidyalaya and directed the CBI to trace the self-styled godman.
On December 20, 2017, the Delhi High Court directed the CBI to investigate the alleged illegal confinement of girls and women at the ashram, who were kept in inhumane conditions behind metal doors in the fort surrounded by barbed wire.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had registered three cases against Dixit for allegedly taking several women and minor girls hostage at his ashram.
During the hearing on Tuesday, the court was of the view that the health department of the Delhi government should take care of this place.
The bench observed, “In broad daylight in a city like Delhi, you are seeing such things. We are amazed to read this.
After a detailed hearing, the matter was attached for April 21 with the petition filed by the NGO Foundation for Social Empowerment.
