new Delhi. The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear on May 10 petitions filed by Google and social media giants Facebook and Twitter, challenging the single-judge order. In this, the links of videos containing derogatory content against yoga guru Swami Ramdev have been asked to be removed globally. A division bench of Justice Rajiv Shakdher and Justice Jasmeet Singh adjourned the matter till May 10 and directed the parties to file written submissions at least three days before the next hearing. The bench also said that the earlier interim order, which had directed not to take any contempt proceedings against the appellants, would continue.
The matter came before the present bench after Justice Vipin Sanghi recused himself from hearing the petitions of the IT giants last month.
Earlier in November 2019, a single-judge bench of the Delhi High Court had directed Facebook to globally remove, block or disable links to videos containing defamation allegations against yoga guru Ramdev.
The court’s order came during the hearing of Ramdev’s plea seeking a global ban on Facebook, Google, YouTube and Twitter for possessing content related to the book.
The IT giant had said that they did not mind blocking and disabling URLs, as far as access in India is concerned, they were opposed to removing/blocking/disabling abusive content on a global basis.
In the last hearing, Facebook’s counsel had requested the court to restrain Ramdev from initiating contempt proceedings against him pending the appeal.
