New Delhi. Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will not be held in Delhi today. The reason for this is that CM Arvind Kejriwal is in jail. It is necessary to have the opinion of the CM in appointing the presiding officer for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The concerned file was sent by the Chief Secretary of Delhi to Arvind Kejriwal’s office, but it was written from there that it was not possible to take CM Kejriwal’s recommendation on the file. After this, Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena decided to postpone the elections. The Lieutenant Governor has asked the current Mayor Shaili Oberoi and Deputy Mayor to work for the time being.
On behalf of the Lieutenant Governor, it has been told that as an administrator, he does not want to use his power in this matter. Apart from CM Kejriwal, no other minister has the right to recommend the appointment of presiding officer for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. In such a situation, there is no other option left except postponing the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi. Actually, after being arrested in the liquor scam case, Arvind Kejriwal has not given the post of CM to anyone else. Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party leaders had claimed that they would run the government from Tihar Jail, but the first hurdle in this was the mayor election itself and Kejriwal’s claim has become futile.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by ED on March 21. After that the court gave Arvind Kejriwal on ED remand twice. Arvind Kejriwal is in Tihar jail since his remand ended. Delhi High Court refused to grant him bail. At the same time, hearing on the bail application is going on in the Supreme Court. ED has called Arvind Kejriwal the kingpin in the liquor scam. All the accused are in jail in the liquor scam case. Among them is Manish Sisodia, who was Deputy CM in Kejriwal government. Whereas, MP Sanjay Singh has recently got bail from the Supreme Court.
