new Delhi. A Delhi court on Monday once again deferred its verdict on the bail plea of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid in a case related to the alleged “big conspiracy” behind the Delhi riots.
Karkardooma Court Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, who was scheduled to deliver his verdict in the case on Monday, deferred it after the prosecution filed a written note.
The order, which was originally scheduled to be pronounced on March 14, was listed for March 21.
On March 3, a bench had reserved its order after hearing the arguments of the parties in the matter.
Opposing the bail plea, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Amit Prasad argued on the relevance of the speech made by Umar Khalid in Amaravati in February 2020. He said the bail application was rejected on February 11.
During the hearing, Khalid’s counsel opposed the charges under the Indian Penal Code and UAPA, terming the chargesheet as a “work of fiction”. He argued that the speech given by Khalid was about Gandhi, harmony and the Constitution, and was not a crime.
After arguments, the court had reserved the order.
Khalid, one of the accused in the conspiracy case, has been booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act – Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Riots erupted in Northeast Delhi in February 2020 following clashes between anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and pro-CAA protesters. The devastation coincided with the first visit of the then US President Donald Trump to India. More than 50 people lost their lives and more than 700 were injured in the riots.
