Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has launched a scathing attack on Kerala’s ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, and leveled serious allegations. The Muslim League has lashed out at the CPM, saying that its ‘anti-Muslim campaign’ during the Lok Sabha elections helped the BJP win the Thrissur seat and open its account in the state. IUML, a key ally in the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), called the Marxist party’s campaign that if the Left does not exist, Muslims will become second-class citizens in the country a mere ‘joke’.
‘BJP reaps what the left party sows’
IUML chief Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal in an interview published in the party mouthpiece ‘Chandrika’ on Saturday claimed that the CPM often opts for a “double-edged strategy” for its campaign and that the “BJP reaps what the Left sows”. He urged all, including the Left parties, to introspect on the reasons for the BJP’s victory and its increased vote share in Thrissur. “There are many reasons for this. One is obvious. The anti-Muslim campaigns launched by the CPM also helped the BJP. What the CPM sows, the BJP reaps,” he said.
‘IUML also won in Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu’
Thangal said while the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Thrissur constituency, the Congress-UDF candidate still got a majority in the Guruvayur assembly constituency, where the IUML has a strong presence. He said in the April 26 Lok Sabha election, the Muslim League candidate won by over 1.5 lakh votes in Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu, where the total Muslim population is just 18 per cent. The Muslim League had won two seats – Malappuram and Ponnani in Kerala, and Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu, taking the party’s total win to three seats in the Lok Sabha polls. (PTI)
