new Delhi. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday inaugurated his party’s new office ‘Anna-Kalaignar Arivalayam’ in Delhi. Congress President Sonia Gandhi was also present on the occasion.
Tamil Nadu’s regional party DMK now wants to move towards national politics. The DMK on Saturday inaugurated the grand office of the party in Delhi. On this occasion, the DMK chief had invited leaders of several parties including BJP-Congress for the inauguration ceremony. On Saturday, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Communist Party of India Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury were present at the inauguration ceremony. MK Stalin on Thursday, on the first day of his Delhi visit, had invited Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal and leaders of other parties to meet them.
It is noteworthy that CM Stalin’s father and late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Karunanidhi had allied with both the NDA and the UPA. During the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, DMK was involved in the NDA central government. The party is now part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), but Stalin no longer wants to limit the party to a regional party. That’s why I want to take the party forward at the national level. Notably, the DMK is the third largest party in the Lok Sabha with 23 MPs. West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Andhra Pradesh’s YSRCP won two seats each in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and were trailing the DMK. Thus, the DMK is the party winning the most seats in the country after the two largest parties BJP (303 seats) and Congress (52 seats).
