Chennai. A tragic incident has come to light from Tamil Nadu’s Vellore, in which a man and his daughter died due to suffocation due to the flames in an e-bike at their asbestos sheet-filled house in the early hours of Saturday.
Police said M. Duraivarma (49), who runs a photo studio near Tollgate in Vellore, had bought a new e-bike a few days ago. He plugged his bike charger into an old socket in front of his house and slept on Friday night.
Due to an electrical short circuit, the e-bike engulfed in flames and smoke spread in the house.
Police said that along with Duraivarma, her 13-year-old daughter Mohana Preeti of Class VIII was also found dead in the house. A socket with a low voltage capability for charging an e-bike may be out of date.
Locals said they saw the e-bike in flames and smoke in the house around 1 pm, they informed the police and Duraivarma’s sister. However, the locals could not control the fire as the fire had spread to a nearby petrol bike.
A fire brigade unit reached the spot from Vellore and doused the fire and local people broke into the main door and entered the house.
The father and daughter were found dead with minor injuries, police said. They believe that the father and daughter died of suffocation as there were no burn marks on the body.
Duraivarma’s wife died in 2013 and he lived with his son and daughter. After dinner, their son moved in with a close relative, while the father and daughter slept in the house when the tragedy occurred.
Locals said that their daughter had come to meet her father after several months as she was studying at a relative’s house in Tiruvannamalai.
