Kolkata. In a sudden development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday took into custody suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan. He is accused of being the mastermind of the attack on the ED and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) team on January 5 in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. A team of ED officials, armed with a local court order, interrogated Shahjahan at Basirhat sub-jail in North 24 Parganas district on Saturday afternoon in connection with the ration distribution case worth crores of rupees in the state.
After about four hours of interrogation, the ED decided to take him into custody as the accused allegedly did not cooperate with the interrogation and avoided most of the questions asked. Shahjahan was first arrested in February this year by Basirhat district police on charges of planning and conspiring to attack ED and CAPF teams. After this, he was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police. Later, following an order of the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took him into custody.

Sources said that ED will take Shahjahan to its office in Central Kolkata on Saturday night itself. Initially, the ED was considering taking Shahjahan into custody next week after getting the necessary permission from a special PMLA court in Kolkata. However, seeing his non-cooperative attitude during interrogation, the central agency decided to take him into custody with immediate effect.
