Election Flashback: Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 has started. The results will be declared on June 4 after voting in seven phases. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to form the government for the third consecutive time. However, the results of the election and the reasons for victory or defeat become known only after the voting is completed. Many times it is the house piercers who cause huge losses to the parties. Same thing happened with Congress in 1967. The ruling party in Delhi had lost six out of seven seats.
The reason for the defeat of Congress was the first Chief Minister of Delhi, Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Yadav. He himself had won the Lok Sabha elections, but had tried hard to defeat his own party on the other six seats and the Congress could not win any other seat in Delhi.
Jana Sangh had got all the seats
For the first time in this election, Jan Sangh won six seats in Delhi. Chaudhary Brahm Prakash won the only seat, but the victory margin in this too was less. The process of defeat of the sitting MPs started in this election. Three Congress MPs were defeated. Naval Prabhakar, who had won three consecutive elections, also had to face defeat in the fourth election. Mir Chand Khanna from New Delhi and Shyam Nath from Chandni Chowk also had to face defeat. Only Chaudhary Bramga Prakash could win the election. He became MP for the second time. He had won from Outer Delhi Lok Sabha seat, whereas in the first election he had become MP from Sadar.
31 candidates could not save their deposits
In 1967, 46 leaders contested the seven Lok Sabha seats of Delhi. Of these, only 15 candidates were able to save their security deposit. Along with the candidates who won the elections on all seven seats, the deposits of the candidate who stood second and the candidate who stood third in Chandni Chowk were saved. Apart from this, the deposits of other 31 candidates were confiscated.
Even rebel Nair could not save the bail
CK Nair had become MP from Outer Delhi in the first and second elections. He wanted to contest in the fourth election also, but he did not get the ticket. In such a situation, he rebelled and contested the elections as an independent. However, the public did not support him and he remained at third position. His bail was also confiscated.
Two seats were increased before the elections
In the first Lok Sabha elections, there were three seats in Delhi, while in the second elections one seat was increased. Similarly, before the third election also one seat was increased. During this election, the number of seats in Delhi was once again increased and the total number of seats reached seven. Two new seats were created named East Delhi and South Delhi. Jan Sangh candidates had won on both.
Congress lost due to Indira’s arbitrariness
Chaudhary Brahm Prakash, who became the first Chief Minister of Delhi in 1952, had become a powerful leader of the Congress by this election and wanted to get tickets for the leaders of his choice on all the seven seats of Delhi. Indira Gandhi had given him the ticket, but had given tickets on other seats as per her own wish. Due to this, Chaudhary Brahma Prakash got angry and he started defeating the Congress candidates on the other six seats. He was also successful in his objective. After this election he also broke ties with Congress. In this election, Congress won in the entire country, but had to face defeat in Delhi.
