New Delhi: Atal Bihari Vajpayee was one of the most popular leaders of Indian politics. He was the Prime Minister of India three times. First of all, he was the PM of the country for 13 days in the year 1996. For the second time he remained PM from 1998 to 1999. This government lasted only 13 months. He remained PM for the third time from 1999 to 2004.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government fell by one vote
This incident happened in 1999, when the Atal government could last only 13 months and fell by just one vote. Actually, Atal became PM for the second time in 1998. But the political equations became such that on 17 April 1999 he had to prove his majority in the Lok Sabha. This day proved to be very bad for the Atal government and 269 votes were cast in its support, while 270 votes were cast in opposition. Vajpayee government lost the trust vote and fell.
Got a shock because of this leader
This is mentioned in the book ‘The Years that Changed India’ by Shakti Sinha, who was private secretary to the PM in the Atal government. In this he has mentioned all the leaders due to which the Atal government fell. An important name in this is that of J Jayalalitha of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Party.
AIADMK leader J Jayalalitha was a key ally of the Atal government but later she joined hands with the Gandhi family and made a strategy to topple the Atal government. Jayalalithaa, after meeting the then President KR Narayanan, submitted a letter withdrawing support to the Vajpayee government. Only after this the then PM Vajpayee was asked to prove the government’s majority in Parliament.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government was reduced to a minority after AIADMK leader Jayalalitha withdrew support and later lost the trust vote. It is said that the then Congress MP Girdhar Gamang and National Conference’s Saifuddin Soz were responsible for that one vote in bringing down the Vajpayee government. The day after the Atal government fell, Farooq Abdullah expelled Soz from the party.
