The Bombay High Court on Tuesday asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) why poet and social activist Varavara Rao, accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist ties case, should not be granted permanent bail on medical grounds. Varavara Rao is suffering from many diseases. The next hearing in the matter will be held on March 21.
Senior advocate Anand Grover informed the court about Rao’s health condition citing his medical report. Grover also cited Rao as suffering from Parkinson’s disease. To this, a bench of Justice SB Shukre questioned the NIA regarding permanent bail to Rao on medical grounds.
The bench gave time till March 21 to Rao to surrender before the Taloja jail administration. Rao is presently on temporary medical bail. At the same time, Justice Shukre said, in an earlier order passed by another bench of the High Court in February 2021, he was granted temporary medical bail for six months.
NIA has two weeks
NIA counsel Sandesh Patil opposed granting permanent relief to Varavara Rao. Patil said that the year 2021 temporary relief was ordered during the corona pandemic. The High Court has given the NIA two weeks to file its reply.
