no cabinet meeting
Political commentators have said that everything else has been put on hold because of the no-confidence motion. Because of this, the cabinet meeting which is held every week is also not being held. For the third consecutive week, the cabinet meeting scheduled on this Tuesday was postponed. According to observers, all the time of Imran Khan and his ministers is going to work out a strategy to thwart the no-confidence motion. Ministers and PTI leaders have been directed to continue campaigning that the no-confidence motion is unlikely to succeed.
It is said that the Sindh Governor and Defense Minister were instructed to persuade the disgruntled leaders after news appeared in the media that PTI leader Aleem Khan has been contacted by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. PTI sources have told the newspaper Express Tribune that Aleem Khan has been busy in contacting about two dozen disgruntled leaders of PTI in the last two weeks. He has discussed with them the options before the disgruntled leaders and their next strategy. These reports are said to have raised the concern of the PTI leadership.
‘Aafat’ after the Long March
Analysts say the government has been finding itself surrounded for weeks. It was the result of intensified criticism from the opposition that last week Prime Minister Imran Khan announced a cut in the prices of petrol, diesel and electricity. Apart from this, the discussion of a separate province of South Punjab has also been started. Imran has said that soon a constitution amendment bill will be introduced in the National Assembly in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan People’s Party’s Long March on its way to Islamabad is getting a lot of support. The party has indicated that a no-confidence motion will be moved soon after the Long March reaches Islamabad. Pakistan People’s Party leader Khurshid Shah and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chairman of the Pakistan Democratic Movement, a coalition of other opposition parties, held talks on the strategy related to the no-confidence motion on Monday. Due to these activities, the political temperature in the country is increasing.
