New Delhi . Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Parag Agarwal clashed on Twitter on Monday. Twitter CEO Agarwal explained how the micro-blogging platform is fighting spam and fake accounts, which Musk has objected to and stalled a $44 billion Twitter takeover deal. Musk also featured an emoji on his Twitter thread depicting Agarwal as a ‘pile of poo’.
Agarwal tried to address concerns about the presence of fake/spammy accounts in a Twitter thread with data, facts and context, as Musk questioned Twitter data last week on the removal of fake/spam accounts.
“Our actual internal estimates for the last four quarters were less than 5 percent — based on the methodology outlined above. The error margin on our estimates gives us confidence in our public statements each quarter,” Agarwal said.
He responded to Musk, who said he does not believe Twitter’s findings, which say that false or spam accounts represent less than 5 percent of its monetized daily active users (229 million).
Musk said that his team is busy with the random sampling process to detect the presence of fake/spam accounts.
Agarwal replied: “Unfortunately, we do not believe that this specific inference can be made externally, given the critical need to use both public and private information (which we cannot share). Externally , it is not even possible to know which accounts count as MDAU on any given day.”
To this Musk said: “So how do advertisers know what they’re getting for their money? It’s fundamental to the financial health of Twitter.”
