Lucknow. Data from the National Cancer Registry of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) shows that tobacco is the cause of cancer in every second male patient in Uttar Pradesh. Statistics show that more than 53 percent of cancers in men are related to tobacco. For women, this figure is about 15 percent, while the state average is 37.5 percent. The ICMR report indicated that most of these cancers are related to the mouth, lungs and other upper respiratory tract. Most patients reach hospitals in the last stages of cancer, where treatment options become limited.
Experts from the Department of Radiotherapy and Medical Oncology of SGPGIMS stressed the need for ‘self-restraint to keep the disease at bay’. Senior Faculty Punita Lal said that adopting self-control and keeping oneself away from tobacco is the easiest and most effective preventive strategy. Which anyone can adopt. An estimated 2.1 lakh cases of cancer are reported every year in Uttar Pradesh, which is the highest among Indian states. In general, the most common cancer in men was oral cancer (20.4 percent), while the most common cancer in women was breast cancer (23.9 percent).
This hobby is taking a heavy toll, causing cancer, more than 13 lakh deaths every year in India.
The mortality rate of cancer patients in UP (across all categories) is about 55 percent. Shaleen Kumar, another cancer expert, said the theme of 2024 was ‘Close the Care Gap’, while Director Professor R.K. Dhiman said the gap in care for cancer patients is a global concern. Which needs to be resolved immediately. Kumar said every cancer patient has the right to good holistic care, regardless of their social status. To ensure this goal for every patient, doctors, nurses, and health care providers must recognize, acknowledge, and address the unique needs of each patient.
