Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Monday that the government will lay emphasis on setting up more Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in the country as part of efforts to increase the income of small and marginal farmers.
Speaking at the FPO Summit of CII-NCDEX, he said, the government is striving to make Indian agriculture profitable and for the prosperity of farmers. Under this, it has already started planning to set up 10,000 FPOs by 2027-28 with an outlay of Rs 6,865 crore. It is being implemented rapidly. About 86 per cent of the farmers are small and marginal, with an average of less than 1.1 hectares.
Will help in eliminating middlemen
Tomar said, in order to increase the income of the farmers, the government is trying to provide easy financing, market linkage and eliminating middlemen in the work of agricultural marketing. Use of technology and crop diversification in agriculture is being promoted. With a view to increase investment in the agriculture sector, the government has increased the agricultural credit target to about Rs 18 lakh crore from Rs 6-7 lakh crore in 2014.
