New Delhi. Congress has attacked former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket, over his alleged comment that he could not choose between Gandhi and Godse. The party has demanded that the ruling BJP at the Center should withdraw his candidature for the Lok Sabha elections. Gangopadhyay, who recently joined the BJP, is among the 19 candidates whose names were announced by the BJP on Sunday for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal.
Taking a dig at Gangopadhyay, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on Had recently resigned to fight and has the blessings of none other than the Prime Minister.
Ramesh said, ‘This is completely unacceptable and his candidature should be immediately withdrawn by those who left no stone unturned to usurp the Mahatma’s legacy.’ He said, ‘What will the ‘Father of Do-Nation’ do now to protect the Father of the Nation?’
In fact, in a program of Aaj Tak Bangla, Gangopadhyay was shown saying that he ‘cannot choose between (Mahatma) Gandhi and (Nathuram) Godse.’ He was quoted as saying, ‘As a person in the legal profession, I should try to understand the other side of the story. I should read his (Nathuram Godse) writings and understand why he had to kill Mahatma Gandhi. Till then, I cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse.
Although Gangopadhyay condemned the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, he stressed ‘the need to examine all aspects of historical events’.
