A 17-year-old student studying in a private college in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, committed suicide. A first year Diploma student jumped from the hostel roof on Thursday night. He was immediately taken to hospital, but died the next day from his severe injuries. Texts sent to her family revealed that the student was suffering deep emotional pain as she revealed she was a victim of sexual assault on campus.
Threat of not reporting
She told in her message that she was subjected to harassment by the college, staff and faculty. Despite bringing this issue to the attention of the faculty, he did not get their support, due to which he came under a lot of attack. He was even threatened for not reporting the matter to the police. The student also revealed in her message that she was threatened with releasing her private photos on social media if she tried to highlight the issue.

She indicated that she was not the only one to face such harassment in college, but many other girls too are suffering the same fate. In his last message, the minor apologized to his parents for his drastic step and said that he felt he had no other option. She hopes her suicide will shed light on the oppression she and others have endured.
Formation of three-member inquiry committee
Technical Education Commissioner Chadalwada Nagrani on Saturday issued orders for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. He said a detailed report should be submitted within 24 hours. He said that based on media reports, the department has constituted a three-member investigation committee to bring out the facts of the case. Pendurthi Government Polytechnic College Principal N. Chandra Shekhar is the investigating officer, while the head of the metallurgy department is K. Ratna Kumar and civil engineering lecturer K, Visakhapatnam Government Polytechnic College. Rajya Lakshmi is a member of the panel.
Sent WhatsApp message to father
Nagrani said that according to media reports, the student sent a WhatsApp message to her father saying that she was taking this step because she was being sexually harassed by a lecturer in the college. She also messaged saying that she is not the only one who has been a victim of sexual harassment and there are others too. He said that he was left with no option but to end his life to draw people’s attention towards the heinous crime committed in the institute. Nagrani said the department would initiate appropriate action against the culprits without any delay.
