New Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday bluntly said that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is included in the BJP’s agenda as the party believes that in a secular country there should be common laws for all people. Addressing a session of ‘AnyTV Rising Bharat Summit’, when asked about the implementation of UCC, he said that this is a long-standing issue which the party cannot abandon.
The Union Minister said, “UCC has been our issue since 1950. Our party has agitated for this. We cannot move away from this. We believe that in a secular country there should be one law for everyone. “UCC is BJP’s promise to the people of the country.”
BJP-ruled Uttarakhand last month enacted a law to implement the UCC to ensure equal rules for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and property rights for all citizens irrespective of different faiths. Similar laws are expected to be brought in other BJP ruled states also.
Shah criticized opposition parties for allegedly spreading confusion about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019. The Center has recently issued rules for the implementation of CAA. He said, “For vote bank, the opposition is spreading the illusion that CAA will take away the citizenship of the country’s minorities. But CAA will not take away anyone’s citizenship, only refugees from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian and Parsi communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be given citizenship.
The Union Home Minister said, “The Muslims of this country need not be afraid. CAA is not a law to take away citizenship but to give citizenship.” Rejecting the claim that the BJP would mainly benefit from electoral bonds, Shah said that after its abolition, there is a possibility of black money making a comeback in election financing.
