In Chhattisgarh, former leader of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and former MLA Anoop Kumar Sai has been sentenced to life imprisonment. This decision has come by the Raigad District Court in the case of murder of a woman and her daughter. Raigad district’s Public Prosecutor Deepak Sharma told on Saturday that the court of the fifth Additional Sessions Judge Kamlesh Jagdalla of the district has sentenced Sai to this sentence.
The incident happened on 7 May 2016
Sharma said that on May 7, 2016, a woman and her daughter were crushed to death by unidentified persons on Hamirpur Road in Raigad district. The deceased were identified in March 2017 as Kalpana Das (32) and her daughter Babli (14), residents of Brajrajnagar in Odisha, they said. This case was about a love affair. He said that under the leadership of the then Superintendent of Police of the district, Santosh Singh, the Chakradharnagar police arrested former MLA and the then chairman of Odisha State Warehousing Corporation, Sai and his driver Vardhan Toppo in this case on February 13, 2020.
Convicted of murder, conspiracy and concealment of evidence
According to Sharma, the police later intervened in the case against Sai and Vardhan in the court. After hearing both the sides, the court found Sai guilty of murder of Kalpana Das and her daughter, criminal conspiracy and suppression of evidence, he said. The court sentenced Sai to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. In default of payment of fine, he will have to undergo additional imprisonment of six months. Sharma told that the court has acquitted Sai’s driver Vardhan for lack of evidence.
