Gangubai Kathiawadi: Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has landed in controversy just before its release. A court case has been filed against the film just before its release on February 25, which will be heard in the Bombay High Court today. Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel and people from South Mumbai’s Kamathipura have filed a petition in the Bombay High Court demanding that the area’s name be censored or dropped from the film’s name. Shraddha Surve, a resident of Kamathipura, on Tuesday filed a petition with a division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Justice Madhav Jamdar, requesting urgent hearing as the film is scheduled to release on Friday.

Similar objection has also been raised in a PIL filed by MLA Amin Patel before a division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice MS Karnik. Surve’s petition claimed that the film portrays the Kamathipura area negatively and may malign and defame its residents.
According to the petition, the reputation of the area has been tarnished since the release of the film’s trailer, as the trailer made derogatory allegations and painted the entire area as a red-light district. According to the petition, the social impact of the film would be that all female residents would be treated as prostitutes, teased and taunted.
