The BJP is the ruling party in Goa while the Congress is the main opposition party. With the entry of Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena, this time the contest has become multi-cornered. While the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party are contesting the elections alone, the Congress has forged an alliance with Vijay Sardesai’s Goa Forward Party. The Trinamool Congress has forged an alliance with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), while the Shiv Sena fought the elections in alliance with the NCP.
This time Goa recorded the highest voter turnout of 78.94 percent. A total of 332 candidates were in the fray from 40 assembly seats in the Goa Legislative Assembly. Some of the prominent candidates in the fray include sitting CM and BJP leader Pramod Sawant, ministers Chandrakant Kavlekar, Manohar Ajgaonkar, former chief minister and TMC leader Luizinho Faleiro, Nilesh Joao Cabral, Vishwajit Rane’s wife Divya Rane, former BJP leader Utpal Parrikar, AAP’s Amit Palekar, Delilah Lobo and Vijay Sardesai of GFP, among others.
No party was predicted to have a clear majority in the Goa exit polls. This situation has arisen due to the entry of many parties in the field. All eyes are on the performance of TMC and Aam Aadmi Party.
