GST Council Meeting: A two-day meeting of the GST Council was held in Chandigarh. Several proposals were approved on the first day of this meeting chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. On the last day, no decision was taken on the proposal of increasing GST compensation to the states. Also, the proposal to impose 28% tax on online gaming has been deferred.

On the last day of the meeting of the GST Council, a decision was not taken on the proposal to increase the GST compensation to the states. Finance Minister Nirman Sitharaman said, ’16 states spoke on the issue of compensation’. Four proposals of the GoM were discussed in the meeting. The proposal for 28% tax on online gaming, casinos and horse racing has been deferred till the next meeting. Now the next council meeting will be held in August.

The Finance Minister said that the GST Council has asked the Group of Ministers to consider the tax rate by July 15. proposals that have been approved. In them, the rate rationalization panel has been given an extension. At the same time, the proposal of inverted duty was approved.

5 percent tax on food items

According to the report, many major decisions were taken on the first day of the meeting. Pre-packaged and leveled flour and rice will attract 5% tax. Meat, fish, curd and honey will also be taxed at the rate of 5%. Jaggery, exotic vegetables, unroasted coffee bean, unprocessed green tea, wheat bran and rice bran were exempted.

Now staying in a budget hotel will be expensive. Now a hotel room of less than Rs 1000 per day will be taxed at the rate of 12 per cent. At present, such rooms come under the tax free category. At the same time, the proposal to levy GST on the fee charged by the bank for issuance of cheque has been approved. Apart from this, it has been agreed to waive the mandatory registration for small online businessmen in the meeting. The change in law will come into effect from January 1, 2023.
