Election Flashback: Lok Sabha elections are going on across the country. On one hand, BJP is running with the slogan of crossing 400, while on the other hand, the opposition also has full confidence in its alliance. All the parties are talking about getting majority in the elections. Amidst all this, Chhindwara seat of Madhya Pradesh is considered the stronghold of Congress. However, this time BJP says that they will also capture Chhindwara seat of MP.
Congress gave ticket to Nakulnath
Let us tell you that this time Congress has given ticket to Kamal Nath’s son Nakul Nath from Chhindwara seat, which is considered a Congress stronghold. Even before this, Kamal Nath had been MP from this seat 9 times. Despite this, BJP leaders believe that he will defeat Nakul Nath on this seat. However, this will not be the first time that Congress will face defeat in its stronghold.
Was defeated in 1997 by-election
Let us tell you that even before this, Kamal Nath had once faced a crushing defeat in his stronghold. That year was 1997, when by-election was held on Chhindwara seat and in this by-election Congress had to face defeat against BJP. At this time, BJP had fielded Sundar Lal Patwa against Congress candidate Kamal Nath. When the results of the by-election were revealed, Kamal Nath suffered a crushing defeat by a margin of 37,680 votes.
Why were by-elections held in Chhindwara in 1997?
- In 1996, Kamal Nath’s wife Alka had contested elections from Chhindwara and won the seat by a margin of more than 2,100 votes against BJP’s Chaudhary Chandrabhan.
- Alka contested the elections in place of Kamal Nath, because his name had surfaced in the Hawala scandal.
- The names of many prominent Congress and BJP leaders including VC Shukla, Madhavrao Scindia, Kamal Nath, Lal Krishna Advani, Madan Lal Khurana were involved in this scam.
- However, in 1997, when Kamal Nath got a clean chit in the case, Alka had to resign and a by-election was held on Chhindwara seat.
- But Kamal Nath failed to regain hold of his stronghold and lost to BJP leader Sundar Lal Patwa.
- Sunder Lal Patwa got a total of 51.37 percent votes, while Kamal Nath got 45.75 percent votes.
