Many parts of India are experiencing severe heat and the maximum temperature has been recorded four to six degrees higher. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has warned of heat wave havoc in seven states. In these states, there is a possibility of heat wave lasting three times more than normal. However, there is some relief from the heat due to strong winds in the country’s capital Delhi and surrounding areas. There are also light clouds here and with some rain, people can get relief from the heat for some time.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature in many areas of the country was recorded four to six degrees Celsius above normal. According to the India Meteorological Department, maximum temperatures were recorded between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius in parts of Odisha and Rayalaseema, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The maximum temperature in parts of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Uttar Pradesh remained between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius.
Second round of heat wave this month
The weather department said maximum temperatures were four to six degrees Celsius above normal in many parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha and in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Chhattisgarh, Central Temperatures in some parts of the state, Vidarbha and Telangana were recorded two to four degrees Celsius above normal. This is the second wave of heat wave this month. In the first phase, there was extreme heat in parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. According to the department, on Sunday the maximum temperature was recorded at 46 degrees Celsius in Baharagora in Jharkhand, 44.6 degrees Celsius in Baripada in Odisha and 44.5 degrees in Bankura in West Bengal. The maximum temperature was 44 degrees Celsius in Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh and 43.6 degrees in Washim in Vidarbha.
Heat wave wreaks havoc in seven states
Amid weakening El Nino conditions, the weather department had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period. Voting for the Lok Sabha elections is also taking place in the country at this time. The elections are being held in seven phases. Voting for the first phase of elections was held on April 19. The weather office has said that there is a possibility of four to eight days of heat wave in different parts of the country in April, whereas normally one to three days are heat wave days. The heat wave is expected to last for ten to 20 days in the entire April-June period compared to the usual four to eight days. The areas which are predicted to see a large number of heat wave days include Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Bihar and Jharkhand. In some places, heat wave may last for more than 20 days.
The extreme heat may put pressure on the power grid and result in water shortages in some parts of India. Global weather agencies including IMD are also expecting La Nina conditions by the end of the year.
