With the onset of monsoon, heavy rain alert has been issued in most parts of the country. The effect of southwest monsoon has started showing in many parts of the country. Heavy rain is expected in Gujarat for the next five days. At the same time, a red alert for heavy rain has been issued in Karnataka. Due to the rain alert, the administration has closed schools in Mangaluru. Heavy rain is also occurring in Uttarakhand and Odisha.
The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy (115.5-204.4 mm) rainfall at some places in Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on June 28 and 29. At the same time, heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy (115.5-204.4 mm) rain is likely at isolated places in West Uttar Pradesh on June 28 and 29, 2024.
Schools closed in Karnataka
In view of the warning of heavy rains in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, a holiday has been declared in all primary and high schools and Anganwadis for Thursday. The official spokesperson of the state government said that after the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert of heavy rains for the districts of coastal Karnataka till 8:30 am on Thursday, District Collector MP Mullai Muhilan directed to keep all schools in Dakshina Kannada district closed tomorrow. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains and winds with a speed of 30-40 kmph in coastal Karnataka on Thursday. Apart from this, the Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy to very heavy rains in all the coastal districts of Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada from June 28 to June 30.
Yellow alert in Delhi
The IMD said that the western disturbance has caused a change in the weather in Delhi. Low-lying strong southerly and south-westerly winds are blowing from the Bay of Bengal to East and Northeast India. The Meteorological Department has predicted light rain and drizzle along with strong winds in Delhi in the next few days. According to the seven-day forecast of the IMD, the maximum temperature in Delhi will drop to 34 degrees Celsius in the next few days. The people of Delhi are currently battling severe heat and heatwaves have occurred for nine days in June so far, while there was not a single day of heatwave during the same period in 2023 and 2022. The maximum temperature has dropped below 40 degrees Celsius due to western disturbances in northwest India. The monsoon usually enters Delhi between June 27 and 29. The Meteorological Department has forecast generally cloudy sky, light rain and thundershowers and strong winds at a speed of 25 to 35 kmph for Thursday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 38 and 29 degrees Celsius respectively. A ‘yellow’ alert has been issued in Delhi for the next three days.
Five killed in lightning strike in Odisha
At least five people were killed in lightning strikes at different places in Odisha’s Bargarh and Bolangir districts. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Three people were killed in lightning strikes at Duanadihi village in Bargarh, while two others lost their lives in Chaulbanji village in Bolangir.
