New Delhi. After the attack on tourists by terrorists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the central government has started preparing to take important steps with Pakistan regarding the Indus Water Treaty. In this connection, a high -level meeting is going on at the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday.
In the meeting, Amit Shah along with Union Water Power Minister C.R. Patil and Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar is present. Apart from these, many senior officials are also involved in this strategic meeting.
According to sources, a detailed roadmap is being discussed on the implementation of the government’s decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty in the meeting.
Earlier, Secretary, Ministry of Water Power, Devashree Mukherjee wrote a letter to Syed Ali Murtaza, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources of Pakistan. Through the letter, he formally informed about the decision to postpone the Indus Water Treaty to Pakistan with immediate effect.
The letter stated that it is in the context of notices sent by the Government of India to the Government of Pakistan, demanding amendment in the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 under Article 12 (3) of the treaty. Notices refer to changing circumstances such as a huge increase in population, need for clean energy development, and basic estimates related to water sharing.
India says that due to these reasons, it is necessary to review the obligations under various articles and contracts of the treaty. The letter also accused Pakistan of violating the treaty.
India said that Pakistan has steadily promoted cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, due to which security uncertainties have obstructed their rights under India’s Treaty.
In addition, Pakistan did not respond to India’s request to start dialogue under the treaty, which is a completely violation of the treaty.
Devashree Mukherjee made it clear in the letter that the decision to suspend the treaty has been taken by the Government of India after intensive deliberations. The Government of India has decided that the Indus Water Treaty will be postponed with immediate effect.
It is noteworthy that the Indus Water Treaty took place in 1960 in the mediation of the World Bank between India and Pakistan, under which India had the right to use water of three Eastern rivers, while three western rivers were shed to Pakistan.
