Bangalore. A special bench of the Karnataka High Court has dismissed petitions seeking permission to wear hijab in classes, but six petitioner girl students of the college, who started the protests, on Tuesday claimed that hijab is as important to them as education. She said that she would not give up the hijab at any cost and would continue her legal battle. Almas said, “We feel betrayed by our own country. All they are saying is that the hijab is not important. While the Qur’an clearly states that the hijab is mandatory.”
Another student petitioner Aaliya Asadi said, “If we are allowed to take the exam, they need to allow us with hijab. Otherwise we will not attend classes. We will not go to college without hijab.”
“The Constitution is good, but the people running it are not there. We are mentally hurt,” he said.
“If the hijab was not necessary, we would not have protested. The Quran clearly mentions the hijab. If the hijab was not necessary, we would not have worn it,” he said.
He further alleged that the issue has been exaggerated for political gains and that is why it has been made communal.
Almas said, “It is not a ban on the hijab, it is a ban on our education. Had Dr. BR Ambedkar been alive, he would have wept after seeing this plight.”
“We didn’t get justice on the hijab. We were expecting to get our constitutional right. We will talk to our lawyers and take a decision in a few days. We haven’t taken any decision yet,” he said.
