new Delhi . The Russian parliament said an airstrike destroyed a historic monastery in Ukraine’s Dormition Svyatogisk Lavra. It was an Orthodox monastery in the Donetsk Oblast region of eastern Ukraine. A parliament statement said several people were injured and taken to a hospital in the eastern city of Svyatogisk, while others were treated on the spot. No one has been killed.
The blast near the monastery’s entrance took place at around 10 pm local time on Saturday. The monastery is 50 meters from the bridge connecting the right and left banks of the Sivnarsky Donets River.
The explosion damaged the temple windows of the monastery and broke the windows and doors of a nearby hotel.
According to a CNN report, about 520 refugees, including 200 children, were seeking permission to take refuge in the monastery. Incidentally, permission was not given, otherwise they would have all been killed. There are about 10,000 refugees and locals in the city of Svyatogisk, the statement said.
The monastery’s bishop, Metropolitan Arseny, said there were no military units in Svyatogisk and the attack was a “peaceful city” and one of Ukraine’s holiest sites.
The Holy Dormition Svyatogisk Lavra is a Ukrainian Orthodox church. It was built at the beginning of the year 1526 and houses the relics of St. John.
