According to mythology, Bhadra is the daughter of Suryadev and Chhaya and sister of Shani Dev. Like his brother, Bhadra’s nature is also said to be angry. In order to control this angry nature of Bhadra, Brahmaji has given him a place in Vishti Karan, a major part of Kalgana or Panchag. In the state of Bhadra, some auspicious works, travel and production etc. have been considered as a taboo. The tendency of Bhadra is considered destructive. That is why it is advised to avoid doing any auspicious event during Bhadra period.
According to astrology, Bhadra moves in all the three worlds according to different zodiac signs. When it happens in the world of death, then it is considered to be a hindrance or destroyer of all auspicious works. On the day when the Moon is in Aquarius, Pisces, Cancer or Leo, Earth’s Bhadra happens and on a day when the Moon is in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Scorpio, then heaven’s Bhadra and on the day the Moon is in Virgo, Libra, If it is in Sagittarius or Capricorn, then it is considered to be the Bhadra of Hades. There are five main parts of the Hindu calendar – Tithi, Var, Yoga, Nakshatra and Karana. The number of Karan in this is 11. The name of the 7th Karan Vishti in 11 Karanas is Bhadra.
Story of Bhadra Origin
According to the legends, to kill the demons, the Sun God and his wife Chhaya produced Bhadra with the mouth of Gardabha (donkey) and the long tail and three legs. As soon as she was born, Bhadra started creating obstacles in the yagyas and started nuisance in auspicious works and started causing pain to the world. Then, at the behest of Suryadev, Brahma ji placed Bhadra as Vishti Karan at the end of the karnas like Bav, Balav, Kaulav etc. Do not respect you, spoil their work.
