Why are there Halkashtak? There is a legend about Halakashtak that King Hiranyakashipu’s son wanted to drive away Prahlad from the devotion of Lord Vishnu. For this Hiranyakashipu tortured Prahlad for eight days. After this, on the eighth day, Prahlad was burnt in the lap of sister Holika (who had the boon of not burning in the fire), yet Prahlad survived. Therefore, these eight days are considered inauspicious and no auspicious work is done. During Halakashtak, all auspicious works including sixteen rites are prohibited. It is not considered good to enter Griha Pravesh or any other building during these days. Not only this, newly married girls are also forbidden to see the first Holi of their in-laws.
