New Delhi. The Western Command of the Indian Army on Sunday successfully tested the Akash surface-to-air missile system. This test, conducted as a regular exercise under the routine drill of the Indian Defense Forces, is a milestone for the country’s defense capability. This Akash missile system has been indigenously designed and developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to promote the Self-reliant India mission.
Akash is a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). It has been developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). Under which Nag, Agni and Trishul missiles and Prithvi ballistic missiles have been developed.

Under this, two missile versions have been made for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army (IA). The Indian Air Force inducted the first batch of Akash missiles in May 2015. The first Akash missile was handed over to the Indian Air Force in March 2012, while it was formally inducted into the Air Force in July 2015. Akash SAM system can engage multiple targets in the air simultaneously.
