New Delhi. After the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), people are thinking about the process of acquiring Indian citizenship for refugees from other countries. The Central Government implemented the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday (11 March). A notification has also been issued in this regard. After its implementation, the way has been cleared for the persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains and Christians of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to acquire Indian citizenship. The Home Ministry has launched a portal in this regard, where eligible persons can apply for citizenship.
To apply on the portal, individuals are required to visit the portal launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in will go on. There they will have to fill their information. After this some basic information will be asked about them. After this a form will open in front of them. After filling all the details in the form they have to attach scanned copies of all the documents. Then, they have to pay the application fee, which is only Rs 50.
After completing all these procedures the persons have to go to the concerned officer. All their documents will be verified upon visit. If the verification of all the documents presented is successful, the person will be called to take the oath by the concerned officer.
Apart from this, individuals will also have to sign a written affidavit. After this, the concerned officer will also have to sign this affidavit. An ‘Empowered Committee’ has been set up to grant citizenship at the state level, which is the final authority for granting citizenship. The ‘Registration Certificate’ will be provided to the applicant only after the signature of the Chairman of the Empowered Committee, which will be received in digital format through the portal.
Additionally, if an ink-signed document is required, individuals must select this option while applying. After that, the individuals have to approach the Chairman of the Empowered Committee to get their final citizenship document. So anyone can get citizenship through this entire process.
It is noteworthy that the Modi government at the Center had brought the Citizenship Amendment Bill in 2019. It was also approved by the President, but it could not be implemented. Opposition parties alleged that the law would jeopardize the citizenship of Indian Muslims, while many questioned the exclusion of Muslims from being granted citizenship under the law.

However, Home Minister Amit Shah clarified in Parliament that the citizenship of any Indian Muslim will not be affected by this law. Despite this assurance, there were widespread protests against it in the country. Now, by implementing this law just a few months before the Lok Sabha elections, the Central Government has played a big political gamble.
