International Cricket Council: Sri Lankan cricket team all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga retired from the Test format on August 15 last year. But he has returned from retirement. Wanindu Hasaranga has been included in Sri Lanka’s squad for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting on March 22. But ICC has taken major action against him, due to which he will not be able to play in this series.
ICC’s big action on Wanindu Hasaranga
Wanindu Hasaranga breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to dissenting from an umpire’s decision during an international match, during the third ODI of the recently concluded series against Bangladesh. The incident occurred in the 37th over of the game when Hasaranga snatched an umpire’s cap and mocked the umpiring in the match. This brings his total to 8 demerit points in a period of 24 months. Therefore Hasaranga will not be able to play in this series against Bangladesh.
Action also taken against Sri Lankan Kusal Mendis
Sri Lanka’s ODI captain Kusal Mendis has also faced a 50 per cent fine and three demerit points for a Level 2 offense after abusing the umpires while shaking hands with them at the end of the third match. Kusal Mendis breached Article 2.13 of the Code, which deals with personal misconduct of a player, umpire or match referee during an international match. Both Hasaranga and Mendis admitted their offenses and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
